Advent is soon upon us and to celebrate its coming I painted this little folk art style angel. As the angel told the shepherds in the field to ‘fear not’ so may we apply these words to our own lives. My prayer is that our hearts be filled with peace and good cheer. Let all fear, doubt, and worry be far from us all.

These are original whimsical pen and ink drawings. These drawings measures 5×7 inches and have wide border for easy framing. I used an acid free cream colored artist paper and the ink is black.

Over this past summer I worked as a Naturalist at a local state park and really began to appreciate these little critters. I discovered they are not only beneficial for forest, but also came in many beautiful shapes, sizes, and colors.

I often doodle and one day my doodles began to look like a little slug and this was the beginning of this series of drawings.

Next time you see a little slug take time to really look. You will be amazed at the many ridges and curves you’ll see.

Each of these drawings are a combination of pen-n-ink and watercolor on a creamy colored acid-free archrival paper. Each one measures 5×7 inches.

Having grown up in the southern part of the United States seeing works by local folk artist was normal. While in my early twenties I had the privilege to visit the home and ‘Paradise Gardens’ of Georgia’s own renowned folk artist Howard Finster. The High Museum of Atlanta has within its permanent collection many works of Mr. Finster and is worth a visit to Atlanta to see.

With all that said it seems natural to work in that particular visual genre now and again. Being a naturalist at heart, birds are a favorite theme of mine. Here is my folk art painting for the day. As you can see the style is simplified and plays on the whimsical nature of the bird and it’s roost.

The piece measures 8.5 x11.5 inches and was painted on un-stretched canvas using oil paints.

Thanks for stopping by…….would love to hear about your favorite folk artist from where you are from.

This is a small canvas painting measuring 4×5 inches. The colors are muted blues and greens with rich yellow and white tones. The painting continues around all the sides giving it a finished look.

This little painted was inspired by a larger work done over a hundred years ago by Vincent Van Gogh while he lived in Antwerp.

This oil panting was done as a warm-up painted sketch. The paint is thick and was done alla prima. The colors are rich blues, yellows, and reds with hints of purples and grey-greens. Size is a long and narrow 3×9 inches.

The impressionistic folk art style figure fills the canvas and pushes to the canvas edges. To give a wholistic feel to the piece the painting was continued onto the sides so this piece can be hung with or without framing.

Thanks for stopping by…..hope you can tap into your creative side today.

This is newest work out of my studio. This piece measures 4×6 inches and is a combination of mosaic and oils on stretched canvas. You can see that the head is painted and the clothes, background and border are all done in small beads.

Needless to say these pieces take a while to do, but are very rewarding.

While working on this piece I mediated on the Gospel passages that tell of Christ at the wedding at Canaan. All marriages face many challenges, but Christ’s love is bigger that any opposition or problem. May Christ’s blessings be on all marriages.

Below are two pictures that show a little of the making process. The white on the border was to light and I had to cover the white with an acrylic gold. The over all effect turned out better than I thought.  Working as an artist has its rewards.

Thanks for stopping by….. May the blessings of Christ be on us all.

Still Life with Flowers

Had this 11×14 canvas in the studio. It had a not so good landscape worked on it. After deciding not to finish the landscape I had an idea for a still life and this is what came out.

The colors of the landscape can be seen peeking through in the background. The flowers and vase are a thick impasto layer of paint with directional stokes. I’d like to think this painting has a touch of Van Gogh-ness about it, but won’t kid myself.

Anyways…..here it is. Hope you get inspired to do your own work of art today.

In between paintings, I love to spend time outside and snap pictures. This summer I spent a lot of time at Tugaloo State Park and while there I was overwhelmed with nature’s abstract beauty. One of my favorite finds were the abundant late August early September mushrooms.

Mushrooms give and take all at the same time. Mushrooms are designed to take nutrients from decaying matter and then return these nutrients to the soil. Pictured below are only a few of the mysterious mushrooms that I found this summer……

Thanks for stopping by……hope you can get outside soon.

Nature is a big inspiration……gives the creative mind something to ponder.
