Have been working on this piece off and on for a few weeks. Really wanted to explore the temperature and values of yellow. What really pulled the piece together was a few strategically place dark blue values in between the lighter value flowers.

The paint is thick rich impasto oil paint on 9×12 inches stretched canvas. The painting continues onto the sides so it can be hung with or without framing.

The over all impression of this piece is a mix between Victorian and the Impressionist. Hope you like it, but if you don’t that’s ok….maybe next time.

Matisse said, “Creativity takes courage” and indeed I would have to agree with Matisse. With the first stroke or mark the judgement is on. The viewer may like what you have done or hate it. But none the less for the artist, putting down what is inside one’s self in line and color is not just a fancy but a necessity.

Pictured below is Matisse’s 1907 portrait of Madame Matisse. 250px-Matisse_mme-matisse-madras (250x314)What draws me to Matisse’s portraits is the combination of simplicity and complexity. Keeping with the spirit of Matisse, I adapted this portrait to make a portrait of my own.matisee angel

If Angels have nationalities, this one would have to be French.  Painting the white-collar against the darker garment colors was quite fun and the dark light effect is pleasing. Simplifying the facial features was really a plus, because it enabled me to focus more on composition, form and color.

I hope you can work up some Matisse like courage and create your own little masterpiece….matisse angel 1.      Thanks! matisse angel2

Matisse said, “Exactitude is not truth”…… Simple saying yet when pondered deep truth. The eye and the mind are always tricking us…..making us think we know something because we saw, heard, or felt it.

I would dare to say Matisse was more interested in capturing what he felt about his subject than what he saw on his canvas. I must admit it has taken me to long to appreciate the complexity of Matisse’s simplicity. Long Live Matisse!

Pictured below is a Matisse drawing of a pitcher and flowers. Pictured below Matisse’s drawing is a painting I did based on his drawing.

The goal was not to make an exact painting of a vase with flowers, I have a camera for that, but I wanted to express my feeling of it. Peach tones, yellows, purples and gray-blacks were the colors that captured the feelings being made by the visual.

Although there are some areas that could be re-worked…..I think I’ll stop here….overall I like this piece and will consider it done.

Really enjoyed painting this piece…..

Our trip to the American Southwest and seeing Georgia O’Keeffe paintings in Santa Fe were the inspiration for this piece.

The painting was done in oils on a canvas board and measures 16×20 inches.

Had a busy time in the studio….must say it was hard considering we are having beautiful weather here in NE Georgia…..today was in the 60’s.

Pictured are two Folk Art Style landscape paintings with a path leading to a little cottage on a hill. These paintings measure 12×12 inches and are oil are stretched canvas. The painting continues onto the sides so there is no need to frame. Can be hung as is…..

The colors are from a warm palette making a happy mix with the simplified designs. Simplicity and brilliant colors are what I like best about folk art. For me it’s pleasant to look at and loads of fun to do!
