Here’s a picture of me at my state park job….have been doing snake programs for a year now….but this is the first time I’ve gotten our rat snake out of his cage….he is six foot, ill tempered and has been known to bite. This morning he was cold and slow…..so I mustered up enough nerve to get him out…..not sure I’ll have that much nerve again any time soon….

Just finished these two paintings that were commissioned for a baby’s room. The mom sent the images to me as a download. From the download I was able to draw the images, then transfer them to 11×14 canvases…. then on came the color.
This was a straight forward job…very clip arty. Although, I don’t normally paint in this style….I did enjoy doing these. The mom knew exactly what she wanted….I like that because it takes the guess work out of it… Plus the images were clear and straight forward…..again this made my job easier.
As with all commission work…I try to get all the specifics…such as size, color, composition and price…down in writing with the client, before I begin working. There is nothing more frustrated than getting part way through a project and having an undecided client change their mind.
Also, with commission work….I always send pictures to the client as I work. Pictures of the various stages is a good way to communicate with clients and acts as visual record. It is harder for a client to change things later on if you have kept good communication throughout the creative process.
These two still have to be signed and then coated with a UVA protective acrylic coat….if all goes well… should be able to mail these out by the first of next week.
All the best to the family and their soon arriving baby!

A big part of my life is family….without them I may have pulled a Van Gogh by now. My family keeps me rooted and happy. They share their joys of life with me and most importantly they put up with me. My kids (my daughter the only girl and son sixth from the left) are a part of their High School Band which got selected to play at the Koger Center on Columbia SC. The band was awesome and we had a great time. Was a much needed break…..now I’m ready to get back in the studio.

Georgia, the state I live in is beautiful, but I really don’t find the landscape very inspiring. So when I go scouting for something new to paint…I focus in on small hidden treasures that I find in the forest.
I was looking for something that had good lines and would lean itself toward abstraction. Below are pictured a few of nature’s wonders that I found interesting.
The above picture is called ‘rabbit ear’ by the locals because the leaves are very fleshy and soft to the touch….like a rabbit’s ear.
The one pictured above…was a shocking find. Who would have thought such a lovely orange colored thing would be found growing out of a fallen tree limb on the forest floor.
True to form on such hikes is one of our cats….an old tom cat named Tiger. He follows me around like a dog…minus the barking.
When going on these little hikes I always find an interesting tree. The bark or sometimes the lack of it can be very interesting.
Last picture is of me with my ‘forest coat’ on….would not be caught in town with it on, but it is perfect protection against briers. I just shove my hands into the deep pockets and press through the thickest brier patches.
Said last picture, but I have to post these early blooming daffodils. These were the last find in today’s hike.
Great artistic day….even though I didn’t get any time in the studio. Got lots of ideals from nature for new paintings. Plus being outside is an important thing for me personally.
Hope you get the time and chance to see something wonderful outside today.

Just finished this painting. It is a part of my Blue Horse series. You can see from the under painting stage pictured below…I changed several colors that were originally used in the background. Guess purple has not joined the pallet as one of my favorite colors….replaced it with an orangy-red…and it seemed to work better for me.
After transferring the drawing onto the canvas a quick coat of paint was given to the major areas. Since I work in oils, I hang the ‘work in progress’ in a place that I pass by often, so to give me amble opportunity to study the piece. I don’t go back to a piece until I have it worked out in my head how it should look.
I have found working on a piece before I have figured it out makes for a lot of frustration.
I always use canvases that have the staples on the back…..and I continue the painting onto the sides, so the piece can be hung with or without framing.
I’m a firm believer that being creative is essential to living well….I hope you have some creative time mapped out in your schedule.
All the best to you!

This is an original oil painting on a 12×12 inch stretched canvas. The colors are rich yellows, oranges, reds, and blacks. The painting continues onto the sides, so this piece can be hung with or without framing.
My inspiration for this painting comes from two sources. First, is the red fox who lives in the pasture behind our house. One evening while out for a stroll this little fellow nearly collided with me and my husband. The second inspiration is my love for the landscape of the American southwest. A few summers ago my family spent weeks hiking and camping in deserts of New Mexico and Arizona.
I began this piece with a drawing….once I got the drawing the way I liked it….I then use my overhead projector to enlarge the image and to transfer it onto the canvas.
Next step was the under painting……I chose colors that would work well with the final colors I had in mind. Notice an under color of red was used for the fox, but he ultimately ended up being yellow tones.
For me an underpainting is essential to my style of working
Below are a few close ups…..just to give you an idea of color and brushwork.
As always thanks for stopping by….and I hope you have some time today to let your creative side explore.
