Wanted to do something special for a friend and made her a mixed medium drawing of one of her favorite birds….a red-tailed hawk. Started with a light pencil drawing. The lines were strengthened with Indian ink and color was added with watercolor. Tried to keep the drawing simple and the lines clean.

Birds are a challenging subject matter. Practicing ones drawing skills is a must for a good drawing….but studying and experiencing birds in the wild helps one to go beyond just the technicality of capturing a bird on paper. Getting a sense of the bird’s character is just as important to getting a pleasing drawing.

The park where I work is full of red-tailed hawks. I love hearing them call to each other as they circle over head. Ya know it is going to be a special day when we spot a hawk….

This summer I have had many wonderful encounters with birds….and wanted to capture the spirit of a few of them on paper. For these drawings I used Indian Ink and watercolor.

Hiking is an important part of my creative well-being. Snapped these photos of Rice Creek at Victoria Bryant State Park. There were so many places along this little creek that seemed to possible homes for little fairies. The colors and textures are not unique but are often over looked when one walks at a faster pace. Slowing down and getting at a different point of view allowed my eyes to wonder over new subject matter for these photos.
