Below is pictured an oil painting of a little island on stretched canvas. I used very thick layered paint to create a misty look. I got to visit the island this year and below is the story behind the painting…..

This summer was full of outdoor adventures. As a Georgia State Park Naturalist, I get to met and do outdoor stuff with people who like to do and be outside. The park where I work surrounded on three sides by a beauty lake. Off our shores are several little islands of which I have been dying to visit. I finally got my chance this past fall with 4 other ladies to visit one of the most notable islands.

We took off around 10am in canoes and a kayak. The head wind to the island was brutal and the journey took us a little longer than expected, but once there we were able to relax with lunch and a round of apple juice.

The island itself is small, about 60 feet across. We landed on the south side, which has a little beach, where we parked our boats. A short hike to the interior of the island led us to some makeshift seats and a fire ring. There we let our muscles re-coop and ate our lunch.

On the way back, we spotted one of our park resident Bald Eagles. I never grow tired of seeing those guys. No matter how many times I see them, my heart always races when I see them or hear their call. Over all the day was perfect.

A few weeks later, I experienced the island in a much different way. Being a Naturalist, I am outside rain or shine and on this particular day it rained non-stop all day. Part of my job is checking on campers, so on this rainy day I was checking on a hardy group of campers and from their camping spot, I could see the little island. The rain was so heavy the island nearly disappeared. Only the darkest colors of the island where visible and the edges of the island fused mysteriously with the lake.

So the painting below is a combination of these two experiences….a lovely day with a group of canoers and a very rainy day of wet boots and rain gear.

Gray is a powerful color. We use this color to describe our mood, the sky, or something that is in between. Gray is sometimes thought of as a cold temperature color, but gray can also be a warm tone. Mix a light purple then mix yellow into that mixture and you get a beautiful warm gray color.

Below are two paintings that have been experimentation’s with the color gray.

This first is a close up of a flower and the second…..well you get what that is….

Really loved painting with this yellow, blue, and orange palette. The visual statement of orange and blue is unsettling but pleasing. Orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel. Using opposites almost always give a good color palette to work with.

Have been working on this piece off and on for a few weeks. Really wanted to explore the temperature and values of yellow. What really pulled the piece together was a few strategically place dark blue values in between the lighter value flowers.

The paint is thick rich impasto oil paint on 9×12 inches stretched canvas. The painting continues onto the sides so it can be hung with or without framing.

The over all impression of this piece is a mix between Victorian and the Impressionist. Hope you like it, but if you don’t that’s ok….maybe next time.

Matisse said, “Exactitude is not truth”…… Simple saying yet when pondered deep truth. The eye and the mind are always tricking us…..making us think we know something because we saw, heard, or felt it.

I would dare to say Matisse was more interested in capturing what he felt about his subject than what he saw on his canvas. I must admit it has taken me to long to appreciate the complexity of Matisse’s simplicity. Long Live Matisse!

Pictured below is a Matisse drawing of a pitcher and flowers. Pictured below Matisse’s drawing is a painting I did based on his drawing.

matiss vase

matisse flowers

The goal was not to make an exact painting of a vase with flowers, I have a camera for that, but I wanted to express my feeling of it. Peach tones, yellows, purples and gray-blacks were the colors that captured the feelings being made by the visual.

Although there are some areas that could be re-worked…..I think I’ll stop here….overall I like this piece and will consider it done.

This is an original oil painting of an abstract seascape on a stretched 5×7 inch canvas.

This is an original miniature abstract landscape oil painting on a 3×9 inch stretched canvas. I live in a rural NE Georgia and the inspiration for this piece is from a farmers field and house near our home.

This oil panting was done as a warm-up painted sketch. The paint is thick and was done alla prima. The colors are rich blues, yellows, and reds with hints of purples and grey-greens. Size is a long and narrow 3×9 inches.

The impressionistic folk art style figure fills the canvas and pushes to the canvas edges. To give a wholistic feel to the piece the painting was continued onto the sides so this piece can be hung with or without framing.

Thanks for stopping by…..hope you can tap into your creative side today.

Still Life with Flowers

Had this 11×14 canvas in the studio. It had a not so good landscape worked on it. After deciding not to finish the landscape I had an idea for a still life and this is what came out.

The colors of the landscape can be seen peeking through in the background. The flowers and vase are a thick impasto layer of paint with directional stokes. I’d like to think this painting has a touch of Van Gogh-ness about it, but won’t kid myself.

Anyways…..here it is. Hope you get inspired to do your own work of art today.
