Here is our new puppy…..he is a lab mix. He, along with a sibling were dumped off at a friends house, my friend took one puppy and we took this one.

In celebration of getting a new puppy, I painted him his own picture. The kids decided to name him Bruno which means ‘little black plum,’

Taking in stray animals is all a part of living in a rural community. Painting a portrait of our newest family addition is all a part of being an artist living in rural Georgia.

Just finished these two paintings that were commissioned for a baby’s room. The mom sent the images to me as a download. From the download I was able to draw the images, then transfer them to 11×14 canvases…. then on came the color.

This was a straight forward job…very clip arty. Although, I don’t normally paint in this style….I did enjoy doing these. The mom knew exactly what she wanted….I like that because it takes the guess work out of it… Plus the images were clear and straight forward…..again this made my job easier.

As with all commission work…I try to get all the specifics…such as size, color, composition and price…down in writing with the client, before I begin working. There is nothing more frustrated than getting part way through a project and having an undecided client change their mind.

Also, with commission work….I always send pictures to the client as I work. Pictures of the various stages is a good way to communicate with clients and acts as visual record. It is harder for a client to change things later on if you have kept good communication throughout the creative process.

These two still have to be signed and then coated with a UVA protective acrylic coat….if all goes well… should be able to mail these out by the first of next week.

All the best to the family and their soon arriving baby!

Matisse said, “Creativity takes courage” and indeed I would have to agree with Matisse. With the first stroke or mark the judgement is on. The viewer may like what you have done or hate it. But none the less for the artist, putting down what is inside one’s self in line and color is not just a fancy but a necessity.

Pictured below is Matisse’s 1907 portrait of Madame Matisse. 250px-Matisse_mme-matisse-madras (250x314)What draws me to Matisse’s portraits is the combination of simplicity and complexity. Keeping with the spirit of Matisse, I adapted this portrait to make a portrait of my own.matisee angel

If Angels have nationalities, this one would have to be French.  Painting the white-collar against the darker garment colors was quite fun and the dark light effect is pleasing. Simplifying the facial features was really a plus, because it enabled me to focus more on composition, form and color.

I hope you can work up some Matisse like courage and create your own little masterpiece….matisse angel 1.      Thanks! matisse angel2

Had a busy time in the studio….must say it was hard considering we are having beautiful weather here in NE Georgia…..today was in the 60’s.

Pictured are two Folk Art Style landscape paintings with a path leading to a little cottage on a hill. These paintings measure 12×12 inches and are oil are stretched canvas. The painting continues onto the sides so there is no need to frame. Can be hung as is…..

The colors are from a warm palette making a happy mix with the simplified designs. Simplicity and brilliant colors are what I like best about folk art. For me it’s pleasant to look at and loads of fun to do!

Advent is soon upon us and to celebrate its coming I painted this little folk art style angel. As the angel told the shepherds in the field to ‘fear not’ so may we apply these words to our own lives. My prayer is that our hearts be filled with peace and good cheer. Let all fear, doubt, and worry be far from us all.

These are original whimsical pen and ink drawings. These drawings measures 5×7 inches and have wide border for easy framing. I used an acid free cream colored artist paper and the ink is black.

Over this past summer I worked as a Naturalist at a local state park and really began to appreciate these little critters. I discovered they are not only beneficial for forest, but also came in many beautiful shapes, sizes, and colors.

I often doodle and one day my doodles began to look like a little slug and this was the beginning of this series of drawings.

Next time you see a little slug take time to really look. You will be amazed at the many ridges and curves you’ll see.

While the oil dries on a few works in progress……I did a little sketching to keep busy.

Each of these drawings are a combination of pen-n-ink and watercolor on a creamy colored acid-free archrival paper. Each one measures 5×7 inches.

Having grown up in the southern part of the United States seeing works by local folk artist was normal. While in my early twenties I had the privilege to visit the home and ‘Paradise Gardens’ of Georgia’s own renowned folk artist Howard Finster. The High Museum of Atlanta has within its permanent collection many works of Mr. Finster and is worth a visit to Atlanta to see.

With all that said it seems natural to work in that particular visual genre now and again. Being a naturalist at heart, birds are a favorite theme of mine. Here is my folk art painting for the day. As you can see the style is simplified and plays on the whimsical nature of the bird and it’s roost.

The piece measures 8.5 x11.5 inches and was painted on un-stretched canvas using oil paints.

Thanks for stopping by…….would love to hear about your favorite folk artist from where you are from.

This oil panting was done as a warm-up painted sketch. The paint is thick and was done alla prima. The colors are rich blues, yellows, and reds with hints of purples and grey-greens. Size is a long and narrow 3×9 inches.

The impressionistic folk art style figure fills the canvas and pushes to the canvas edges. To give a wholistic feel to the piece the painting was continued onto the sides so this piece can be hung with or without framing.

Thanks for stopping by…..hope you can tap into your creative side today.
